“One Thing”

Inwardly I turn seeking to find
Some silent thought to still the mind
And search past houses, farms and fields
Past streams and rocks and grassy hills
I look through the gray stillness of dawn
To find the place that lies beyond
To a place private and nearly forgotten
For the path’s grown high since I last trod it
As I lay in slumber with spirit still, - You speak
And grant the one thing I really need:
To be still, and near my God.
